Burt’s Robotic Exoskeleton

I designed and built this gasoline powered lower body exoskeleton (Jogging Machine) in 1978. I was having some fun in this video (going 18 MPH), but I take all the current work in such systems as serious business. I continued working on a walking machine consisting of 2 slideable trays, which the user stood upon, as it simulated a shuffling motion. The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital told me that “such devices would never be practical”. Unimation Robotics, God rest its soul, told me there is “no money in developing such devices”. Here’s a thought for the military biomechanical engineers, you can’t match the stored energy in liquid fuels, with batteries. If you want a practical device to operate in the field, you need to use a clean burning fuel, a high efficiency combustion engine and a catalyst exhaust system for the basic power source.
